Day 36 – Pregnant Functions

I have always taught the chain rule by looking at the composition of functions as a pregnant function (based on this great cartoon). You differentiate the mother, leave the baby alone, then differentiate the baby. We had a funny moment where after learning the chain rule with function notation I asked them to describe in terms of a pregnant lady – one student said, “Okay, first you take the mother and… Change her pants.” I was like ahhh, no, stop, done.
