Day 44 – Walk so that your position vs time graph has…

And term 2 begins!! We had talked about higher order derivatives right before break, so I whipped out the motion detector so we could talk about how the signs of the first and second derivative affect the shape of the graph. I had students line up on the side of the classroom and one by one gave them a set of parameters and told them to walk so that their position vs time graph would have…

  • Zero first derivative
  • A positive first derivative and zero second derivative (and then negative first, zero second)
  • A positive first derivative and positive second derivative (and then positive first, negative second)
  • A negative first derivative and positive second derivative (and the negative first, negative second)
  • Opposite signs for the first and second derivative (and then same signs)

This was really fun. The discussion was a little chaotic, but productive, but the instant feedback from the motion detector was awesome. Good first day back!
