This week we have been working on a project I have done every year that I have taught Calculus where students take UN population data, manually find derivatives and second derivatives and analyze the calculus aspects of the data (increasing and decreasing, concave up and concave down etc) trying to find something interesting. It takes a whole lot of class time, but students learn good Excel skills and cite. The topic as one of the more interesting things that we do all year. It's going okay, it's just taking forever. I modified it this year too, which has made the Calculus better, though I fear is going to make it less interesting for the students. We will see!
