Day 99 – Cold Calling and Slope Field Conclusions

I have been barraged with advice that cold calling will transform my classroom and help my instruction reach more students more effectively. I had been skeptical until today, when I had one of the best classes of the year with my AP class. We were practicing making conclusions about solutions to differential equations based on their slope fields, so I had them brainstorm for 45 seconds silently about one and then cold called with little slips of paper for the first 4 to 5 responses. It was a really good activity to do it with because you could say almost anything. It was the first time I really felt that every single student in the room was working during independent work.

Cold calling: sold!
